You CAN do this!

The Confidence Gap: Why So Many Would-Be Home Business Owners Never Start (And How to Fix It)

I'd like to talk about a subject that I think most of us would like a bit more of - confidence.

You know that dream of running your own home business?

Making sales from your kitchen table, setting your own hours, ditching the 9-to-5 for something with more freedom, joy and purpose?

For many people - maybe even you - the biggest thing standing in the way of that dream isn't money. Or time. Or talent.

It's confidence.

If you've ever asked yourself, "Who am I to start a business?" or "What if I fail in front of everyone?" - you're not alone.

The truth is, some of the most talented, hardworking, passionate people I know never start because they don't feel ready.

That feeling has a name: The Confidence Gap.

It shows up in sneaky ways:

"I'm not tech-savvy enough."

"There are already so many people doing this."

"I need to learn more before I start."

"What if no one buys?"

Here's the truth:

No one feels ready at the beginning. No one.

Why Confidence Matters More Than You Think

Confidence isn't about ego or having all the answers. It's about believing you can figure things out as you go.

That belief? It's the fuel that gets you through tough days.

The shield that softens rejection. The spark that keeps you experimenting, learning and showing up even when things feel hard.

In fact, many successful business owners say it wasn't strategy or skill that made the difference early on - it was the simple decision to keep going.

To trust that they'd get better over time.

And you can too.

Confidence Is Built Through Action (Not Waiting)

Most people think they need confidence first, then they'll act. But that's not how it works.

Action creates confidence.

You become more confident by:

Posting your first product online - even if it isn't perfect

Sending your first email to your list of 3 people

Making your first sale - even if it's to your mum

That's how confidence grows: with practice, consistency, and real-world proof that you can do this.

As Marie Forleo says: "Clarity comes from engagement, not thought."

What Can You Do This Week?

If self-doubt is keeping you from taking action, here are some simple, confidence-building steps to try this week:

Choose One Tiny, Brave Action: Post a reel. Create a Canva graphic. Tell your sister about your idea. Sell one item to one person. You don't need a full plan - you need a starting point.

Flip Your Inner Script: Instead of saying "I'm not good at..." try: "I'm learning how to..." or "I'm just getting started, and that's OK." Language matters. Speak to yourself like someone you're rooting for.

Track Your Progress: Start a "Done List" — a note on your phone or notebook with everything you did do this week. Even the little things. Watching a tutorial counts. Choosing a business name counts.

Follow Founders Who Inspire You: Look for people who started with nothing fancy and built something real.

Podcasts like The Product Boss, YouTube creators like Cathrin Manning, or side hustle communities like Side Hustle Nation are filled with real talk and helpful ideas.

Join a Community: Whether it's a Facebook group, Reddit thread, or online mastermind, being around others on the same journey helps you see what's possible - and reminds you you're not alone.

Book Recommendation: The Confidence Code by Katty Kay & Claire Shipman

This brilliant book dives into how confidence affects women in business and life - and how we can build it.

One key takeaway? Confidence is more influenced by what we do than by how we feel.

What If You're Still Scared?

That's normal.

Being scared doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. It means you care. The trick is learning to act even with fear in the room.

Confidence isn't the absence of fear. It's moving forward anyway.

Final Thought

You don't have to be fearless to start a business. You just have to be willing.

Willing to start messy. Willing to keep showing up. Willing to believe - even just 1% more than you did yesterday.

Because that's where momentum begins. One step. One post. One small, brave move.

The rest builds from there.
