Imagine standing at a craft fair, looking at two stalls...
One has a beautiful handmade candle with a fancy label. The other? It's a similar candle - but the seller tells you it's inspired by their grandmother's garden, where they spent summers learning how to blend herbs and scents as a child.
Same product, different story. Which one do you remember?
Stories stick. They stir emotion. They create connection. And in a noisy online world, that's exactly what your small business needs.
Today we're looking into one of the most overlooked (but incredibly powerful) parts of your home business - your brand story.
As Ann Handley says in her book 'Everybody Writes', it's not about storytelling, it's about telling a true story well.
Why Stories Sell (and Features Don't)
You've probably heard the phrase, "facts tell, but stories sell." It's not just a nice quote. It's backed by psychology.
When we hear stories, our brains light up.
Research from Princeton University shows that storytelling synchronizes the brain activity between the speaker and the listener - creating connection and understanding.
In short: stories make people care.
Most new business owners focus on features - what their product does, how it works, or why it's better.
But customers are far more likely to buy when they understand:
Who you are
Why you do what you do
How your product fits into their life or solves their problem
And that's what a great story delivers.
What Makes a Great Brand Story?
You don't need a dramatic backstory to craft a powerful brand narrative. In fact, the best stories are usually the most relatable ones.
Here are five simple elements you can include to build your own story:
The Starting Point: Where were you before you started this business?
Were you working in a day job, raising kids, struggling with something specific? Set the scene so people know where you came from.
The Turning Point: What made you decide to start your business?
Was it a moment of frustration? A spark of inspiration? A comment from a friend? This gives people a reason to root for you.
The Mission: What's the bigger goal behind your business?
Are you helping people solve a problem? Find more joy? Save time? Make money? Share what drives you beyond just making sales.
Values: What do you stand for?
What matters most to you as a business owner? These could be sustainability, simplicity, creativity, wellness, family - whatever aligns with your brand.
Vision: Where are you heading?
What kind of business (and life) are you building? Inviting people into your journey makes them feel like they are part of something bigger
Real-Life Example: The Story Behind Ink + Volt
Kate Matsudaira started Ink + Volt after years working in tech and feeling frustrated by the lack of paper planners that combined goal-setting and organisation.
She didn't just make a product - she built a story around achieving personal growth in a busy world.
Today, her planners are a favourite among professionals and creatives.
But what keeps people coming back is the message that it's not just a planner - it's a tool for living intentionally.
That's the power of story.
How to Tell Your Story in All the Right Places
It's not enough to write your story once and forget it. The best brand stories are woven throughout your business.
Here's where to share yours:
Your website "About" Page - This is the first place visitors look to understand who's behind the brand.
Don't just list your credentials - tell your story like a conversation. Include a photo of you if possible.
Your Product Descriptions - Add story snippets.
For example: "I designed this mug during lockdown, when I wanted to bring a little joy to my morning coffee routine." These small touches humanise your brand.
Your Emails - Your newsletter is the perfect place to share your journey, lessons you've learned, or behind-the-scenes moments.
People buy from people they feel connected to - this is your chance.
Social Media - Use captions to tell micro-stories: what inspired a new product, a challenge you overcame, a customer review that moved you.
Reels and stories are great for this.
Your Packaging - Include a little card in your orders with a short message or a thank-you that links back to your mission.
It's a small gesture with a big impact.
Template: Your Brand Story in One Paragraph
Here's a fill-in-the-blanks formula to help you start:
"I'm [your name], the founder of [your business name]. I started this business because [your turning point]. At the time, I was [what life looked like before]. I wanted to create [product or service] that would help people [the core transformation or benefit]. My mission is to [big-picture goal]. I believe in [your values], and I'm building a business that [your vision for the future]."
Example: "I'm Amy, the founder of Cosy Stitches. I started this business because I couldn't find handmade baby blankets that were both soft and stylish. At the time, I was a new mum struggling to find time for creativity. I wanted to create comforting gifts that felt personal and unique. My mission is to bring a little warmth and joy into the homes of new parents. I believe in craftsmanship, comfort, and family - and I'm building a business that supports slow, meaningful gifting."
Bonus Tips: Make It Real, Not Polished
Your story doesn't have to sound like a press release. In fact, it shouldn't.
Speak the way you talk. Be honest. Share the messy bits too - people relate more to imperfect beginnings than polished perfection.
A few final tips:
Be clear, not clever. Aim for connection, not jargon.
Share emotions. What were you feeling at key moments?
Use photos. A simple picture of you working, crafting or packing an order goes a long way.
Update your story as you grow. You're allowed to evolve!
Action Step
Write (or revisit) your story. Use the five elements above and the one-paragraph template to start.
Then pick one place to share it - whether it's your website, your next Instagram post, or the next email to your subscribers.
Your story matters more than you think.
And if you're willing to share it - especially the real, imperfect, human parts - people will lean in.
