Ready to show your face?

How to Show Up Online (Even if You're Introverted)

If you are like me then one of the biggest hurdles for a home business owner (especially when you're just starting out) isn't money, or time, or even ideas.

It's you - or more specifically, the fear of putting yourself out there for the world to see.

I know this fear personally.

When I started my own home business journey, the thought of showing my face on video, recording my voice, or writing a post that people might, gasp disagree with... it made me want to hide under my duvet and stay safely invisible.

If this sounds familiar, please know: you are not alone.

Today, let's tackle this fear of visibility together - why it happens, how to work with it (not fight it), and how to start showing up online in a way that feels natural for you.

Why We Hide (And Why It's So Common)

First, let's normalise it: Most people don't love the spotlight.

It's baked into us from childhood - standing up in front of the class, speaking in public, or simply putting our ideas out there opens us up to judgment.

And if you've ever had a boss, teacher, or relative criticise your work, your brain remembers that sting.

So when you sit down to hit "record" or "publish," your brain says, "Whoa! Remember that time they laughed at you? Let's not do that again."

Add to this:

Fear of negative comments ("What if people don't like what I say?")

Perfectionism ("It's not ready yet. I'll wait until it's perfect.")

Comparison ("She does it so much better than I ever could.")

...and you can see why staying invisible feels safer.

But here's the truth: People can't buy from you if they don't know you exist.

If you're here reading this, you're building a home business or side hustle to change your life. Visibility is how you let your future customers find you.

How to Start Showing Up (Without Feeling Fake)

I'm not going to tell you to jump straight onto TikTok with daily dancing Reels (unless you want to!).

Showing up doesn't mean you have to turn yourself into an influencer overnight. Here's what it can look like:

Start Small and Private

Don't fancy blasting your first video to your whole audience? Good. Don't!

Record yourself speaking about your product or idea - just for you.

Watch it back. Notice what you like. Forget the "ums" and hair out of place.

Try again. Keep it to yourself until you feel braver.

Many people warm up by sending a video or voice note to ONE trusted friend or fellow small business owner.

Use Your Voice Before Your Face

Not ready for video? Try voice. Record an audio post or podcast snippet. Many introverts find audio easier than staring into a camera.

Write Like You Talk

If speaking still feels too much, focus on writing. Show your personality in your emails, captions, or posts. Stories build trust - use them!

You don't need to "perform." You just need to connect.

Easing Into Video & Voice (Without Cringing)

Let's tackle the big one: Video.

Video isn't going anywhere.

In 2025, short videos, voice posts, and lives are still the best way to build trust fast.

But that doesn't mean you have to do it in the way everyone else does.

Tips for Baby-Stepping Into Video:

✔️ Keep it short. 15–30 seconds is enough.

✔️ Start with your hands. Film your product, your workspace, your hands packing an order. Add a voiceover if you like.

✔️ Try a behind-the-scenes clip. People love seeing the "real" work - no fancy setup needed.

✔️ Use templates. Apps like Canva, CapCut, or even Instagram's built-in Reels templates make it easy.

✔️ Practice with Stories. Stories on Instagram/Facebook disappear in 24 hours. It's the perfect low-pressure place to try video.

Tip: People actually prefer "imperfect" videos. Slick, corporate ones get ignored. Messy hair, kids in the background, real life - that's relatable. And relatability = trust.

Encouragement for Introverts & Perfectionists

You do not have to be loud to be visible.

Some of the most engaging creators online speak softly, share calmly, and never shout. They win trust with warmth and honesty, not hype.

If you identify as an introvert or perfectionist:

Focus on depth, not noise.

Share thoughtful posts, longer captions, or quiet behind-the-scenes videos.

Show your process - people love seeing how things are made or the story behind your business.

Remember, your people want to hear from you. They don't care if you stumble on a word or your lighting isn't perfect.

Practical Ways to Build Visibility - Without Burnout

Here's how to get visible your way:

Pick 1–2 Platforms You Enjoy

Don't force yourself to be everywhere.

If you like writing, use email and Facebook.

If you like visuals, try Instagram or Pinterest.

If you enjoy speaking, experiment with short videos or podcast clips.

Batch & Schedule

Record 3–4 short videos in one afternoon when you're in the mood. Write a few posts at once.

Use free tools like Buffer, Later, or Meta's Scheduler to drip them out over days or weeks.

Repurpose

One piece of content can live everywhere.

A tip you share on Instagram can become part of your next newsletter.

A live Q&A can be clipped into five Reels. Work smart, not harder.

Celebrate Small Wins

Every time you show up - whether that's one Story or a single post - give yourself credit. This consistency adds up.

Try This: Your Mini Confidence Challenge

If you're nodding along but still hesitant, here's a quick challenge for this week.

Step 1: Record a 30-second video introducing your business (or yourself). Don't worry about posting it - just record.

Step 2: Watch it back. Pick one thing you like. Ignore the rest.

Step 3: If you're feeling brave, share it in a private business group or with a trusted friend. Or post it as a Story and see what happens.

Final Thought: Showing Up is a Skill - Not a Personality

Confidence isn't something you "get" and then keep forever - it's a habit you build, brick by brick.

Every time you share your story, you're building trust with your audience - and with yourself.

You don't have to be the loudest. You don't have to be perfect. You just have to be there.

I hope this gives you the nudge to take that small step.
